Practicing during Thanksgiving week is a tradition for Wagoner. This week the Bulldogs are preparing to face a familiar opponent.
"Anytime you're practicing Thanksgiving week, it's a great week," said Wagoner head coach Dale Condict.
This is not unfamiliar territory for Wagoner. For the third straight year, the Bulldogs will have some pigskin with their pumpkin pie as they prepare for another 4A state title game.
"I don't even know if they realize that you don't practice on Thanksgiving because these guys always have," he added.
On the other sideline will be a familiar opponent, Cascia Hall, who Wagoner beat 34-7 back in Week 4.
"I know they'll bring their best effort,” Condict: stated. “We expect a much tighter ballgame this week, and we're preparing for that."
Quarterback Malcolm Rodriguez added, "We're all psyched to play Cascia Hall again, and it's going to be a good game."
Now, apart from the state championships and the chance at a three-peat, there's something else the seniors have been involved in that they don't want to see end, the streak.
“Well I'd like to tell you it's coaching, but the reality is, we've had real good football players," said Condict.
Wagoner high now has the longest active winning streak in the state, at 35 straight games. Wagoner’s last loss was back in 2014 to Cascia Hall.
"We're worried about the winning streak, but right now we're just playing games,” said Bulldogs’ Cameron Dumond. “We're trying to get that third gold ball is what we're trying to do."
But first, they play the Commandos. That game is 7 p.m. Friday at Sand Springs.
