The Broken Arrow Community Emergency Response Team staged a disaster at Haskell Middle School Saturday afternoon.
The school staged the disaster set up to give students a real-life experience in the hopes that they will have the skills and knowledge to help others in real-life.
Broken Arrow and Union JROTC students and Civil Air Patrol students took part in the Broken Arrow CERT exercise.
The goal was to arrive on the scene, organize a search and rescue effort, and stage a triage center to handle wounded.
Professionals were on hand to guide them through the process but forced the students to use skills they've acquired during a three-day 24-hour course. Skills such as navigating through a dark building that’s riddled with damage and people with injuries.
It's an exercise the Broken Arrow CERT youth coordinator Mackynzie Wolfe-Bell says she hopes will encourage other students to get involved.
"Kids my age don't think that they can get involved, but they totally can,” Wolfe-Bell explained. “So, this class is teaching them they can get involved and how to get involved."
