Union Pacific's No. 844 Steam Locomotive To Visit Oklahoma

Union Pacific railroad 's No. 844 steam locomotive will be passing through northeast Oklahoma Wednesday.

The railroad says the 1,200-mile trip through eight states will be first since the locomotive's three-year restoration.

It was the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific.  

It will begin its trip on October 13th in Nebraska, then wind its way across Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee and Arkansas before traveling into Oklahoma on October 26th.

  • 9-9:15 a.m., Elm Street Crossing in Sallisaw.
  • 10:45-11:15 a.m., SW 5th Street & Jackson Avenue in Wagoner.
  • 12:15-12:30 p.m., North Cherokee Crossing in Claremore.
  • 1:15-1:30 p.m., Near US-60/East Cherokee Avenue Crossing in Nowata.
  • 2:15 p.m., Near Atlantic & Colorado in Coffeyville, Kansas.

It was delivered to Union Pacific in 1944 and was used as a high-speed passenger engine, pulling trains like the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose and Challenger.

Union Pacific says when diesels took over all of the passenger train duties, No. 844 was placed in freight service in Nebraska between 1957 and 1959. 

The last time No. 844 visited Oklahoma was in April 2010.
