Ottawa County Sheriff's Office is investigating after someone turned off the gas to over 200 residents in Afton, the town's mayor said.
Mayor Bill Harrison said they called in law enforcement and are working to restore service to the town's residents.
Harrison said someone either had a key or picked the lock to a building that houses the main valve that feeds gas to the city overnight. City crews had to go through town and shut off individual meters then recharge the system, he said.
Then workers must turn the meters back on and relight pilot lights as needed. Harrison said the city will have service restored by the end of the day Tuesday. About 250 people are affected by the act of vandalism.
Harrison said it's being treated as a criminal act.
