As the 2015-16 athletic season has come to a close for The University of Tulsa, success has occurred on both the playing field and in the classroom. Tulsa boasted a league-best five American Athletic Conference Championships and reached post-season competition for 11 sports, while in the classroom Tulsa student-athletes put up another impressive year.
Sixty-one percent of Tulsa student-athletes registered a 3.0 grade point average or better in the 2016 spring term with a total of 40 student-athletes turning in a perfect 4.0 GPA, while 60-percent have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. There were 232 out of 377 student-athletes to record a GPA of 3.00 or above for the 2016 spring term, while a total of 227 student-athletes have maintained a cumulative GPA above 3.00 for their collegiate careers.
“Our student-athletes have once again shown their hard work and dedication in both their academic and athletic endeavors,” said Dr. Derrick Gragg, vice-president and director of athletics. “We expect our student-athletes to pledge their best effort to their academics, and as seen by these numbers many of them have proven to be exceptional in the classroom.”
Fifteen of Tulsa’s 18 intercollegiate sports have a cumulative GPA of over 3.0, while Tulsa student-athletes have totaled a combined cumulative GPA of 3.249. In the spring semester, there were 14 teams with better than a 3.0 GPA, while the average GPA for all Golden Hurricane teams combined for the spring was 3.136.
Tulsa student-athletes were also recognized with prestigious national awards as soccer athlete Katy Riojas was selected as the 2016 NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship award recipient and women’s rower Emalia Seto earning the NCAA’s 2016 Jim McKay Scholarship. In addition, Rachel Thun (women’s soccer) and Bryce Robinson (track & field) were honored with the Academic Momentum Award.
“Our vision as an athletic department is to achieve consistent top-tier performance in all sports, while being the premier academic program in the American Athletic Conference. With a league-high five conference championships this year and a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, it’s obvious that our student-athletes are reaching that goal,” added Gragg.
