The Grand River Dam Authority is advising Grand Lake and Lake Hudson visitors about possible floodgate releases this holiday weekend.
The advisory follows heavy rains this week in the watershed above both lakes. The GRDA says the possibility remains that floodgates on Grand's Pensacola Dam and the Hudson's Robert S. Kerr Dam will be opened sometime this holiday weekend.
If and when that happens, GRDA reminds visitors to stay well clear of the floodgates, buoy lines on Grand Lake and Lake Hudson, as well as below each dam.
“We’re asking boaters to stay back at least 200 feet from the dams at all times, and that is really a minimum distance. There is a suction action created when floodgates are open so please, stay well clear of those areas. And down below, in the spillway areas, it is not only against the law to enter floodwater releases it’s also very dangerous,” said GRDA's Justin Alberty.
If floodgate changes are made, GRDA will make the information available on its website and Twitter and Facebook.
