A man is dead after being hit by an SUV on Interstate 44 west of Harvard. Police say the pedestrian ran across the highway from the south side of I-44 and was hit in the westbound lanes.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers investigated the fatality.

Troopers say David G. Briseno of Broken Arrow was westbound in a group of cars when he hit 20-year-old Braden Vanvolkinburg of Tulsa. Briseno stopped but couldn't find the man and called police.

Authorities were able to locate Vanvolkinburg who was pronounced dead at the scene.

"I don't think people who get out on the roadway realize how fast cars are coming at them," said Trooper Dwight Durant, OHP public information officer. "People driving down the roadway aren't expecting to see someone."

Authorities told News On 6 they don't anticipate any charges against Briseno, 60.
