Rashad Smith scored 20 points to lead the Tulsa basketball team, but the Golden Hurricane fell to Oregon State, 76-71, Saturday night in the Far West Classic Invitational at the Moda Center.
The Hurricane fell to 7-4, while the Beavers improved to 8-2. James Woodard put up 11 points, six rebounds and seven assists, and Shaquille Harrison tallied 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Smith added seven rebounds for TU. Gary Payton II led OSU with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Oregon State outscored Tulsa 48-37 in the second half, and held a 38-32 advantage in rebounds. Tulsa tallied 14 assists on 24 baskets, and committed 13 turnovers, while OSU had 12 turnovers. Each team recorded six steals. Tulsa scored 32 of it points in the paint.
Tulsa was ahead by 10 points late in the first half, and held a 34-28 lead at the break, but saw its advantage shrink to three points, 36-33, at the 18:53 mark of the second period. Oregon State cut the lead to one – 43-42 with 16:08 remaining – but Tulsa responded with a 3-pointer by Marquel Curtis to make it 46-42. Twice more OSU cut the TU lead to one point, but the Hurricane came back with an answering basket – first by D’Andre Wright, and then another trey by Curtis.
Tulsa led, 55-51, after a pair of free throws by Woodard, but four straight points by the Beavers tied the score, 55-55, with 10:52 left. A free throw by Pat Birt gave TU the lead again, but two free throws from Jarmal Reid put Oregon State in the lead for the first time in the game with 10:11 to play.
Woodard knocked down a 3-pointer and a mid-range jumper on consecutive possessions to cut OSU’s six-point lead to 64-63 with 5:56 left. Tulsa trailed by one, 66-65, after a Harrison layup with 4:02 remaining, but Oregon State scored seven straight points to extend its lead to 73-65 with 0:32 left. Harrison converted two more layups in the final 30 seconds to cut the deficit to four points, but that was as close as Tulsa would get.
The Hurricane shot 45 percent from the field, including 54 percent in the second half. TU made 5-of-17 3-pointers, and connected on 18-of-28 free throws for 64 percent. OSU shot 41 percent from the field, made 7-of-18 threes, and converted 25-of-31 foul shots for 81 percent.
Tulsa started the game with a 7-0 run, fueled by a pair of baskets by Smith and one from Harrison. Oregon State scored its first field goal on a 3-pointer by Olaf Schaftenaar at the 16:15 mark. The Beavers tied the score, 8-8, but the Hurricane scored six consecutive points to run out to a 16-10 lead. TU extended a 17-14 advantage to 23-14 with a 6-0 run by Smith, who ended the first half with 14 points.
The Hurricane held Oregon State without a field goal for 8:19, as it built a 28-19 lead. OSU scored seven points on free throws during that span. Tulsa led 34-24 with 0:52 to play in the half, but a pair of free throws by Tres Tinkle and a layup by Payton cut the margin to 34-28 at the intermission.
The Golden Hurricane returns home to face Northern Arizona at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. It will be Tulsa’s first home contest in 14 days.
