Well-Traveled Cargo Jet Makes Stop In Tulsa

A cargo version of the Boeing 747 landed in Tulsa early Tuesday morning. 

According to FlightAware.com, the four-engine jet landed in Tulsa at about 4:15 a.m. from JFK Airport in New York. Over the last several days it had made stops in Kuwait, New Jersey, Anchorage and Memphis.

The airplane is owned and operated by Kalitta Air. Based in Michigan, Kalitta Air is the second major aviation company founded by Conrad Kalitta.

Kalitta is famous as a top fuel drag racer in the National Hot Rod Association. He doesn't drive anymore but owns three teams in the sport. His winnings on the track enabled him to buy his first cargo plane in 1967, according to his company's web site. 

A source at the airport says the 747 is scheduled to leave at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.

Four-engine jets are a rare sight at Tulsa International Airport. Lufthansa Technik Component Services has brought five to town over the last year for scrapping, but the company says that program has ended.
