For the second straight year, Locust Grove quarterback Mason Fine has been named the Gatorade Player of the Year.
Each year, the winners are chosen based on athletic production and impact on the season.
This year, Fine threw for 4,232 yards and 53 touchdowns and had seven interceptions on 251-of-384 passing, leading the Pirates to the Class 3A quarterfinals and a 12-1 overall record.
The standout also rushed for 631 yards and nine TDs this year. In 2014, he threw for 5,006 yards and tallied 71 scores to set a single-season passing record. In all, Fine’s 13,086 passing yards and 166 TD passes set state career records.
In the classroom, Fine has maintained a 4.0 GPA and is No. 1 in his graduating class. In addition to his outstanding performances on and off the field, he serves as a youth football instructor and has previously volunteered on behalf of the National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
