The Tulsa Zoo will celebrate the first birthday of an endangered chimpanzee, Enloe Monday morning.
Enloe is the 13th chimpanzee born at the Tulsa Zoo since it began exhibiting the species in 1950. Officials say Enloe’s birth was planned in conjunction with the Chimpanzee Species Survival Plan, which manages species in Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited institutions across the nation.
Zoo officials say Enloe is now eating solid foods and learning to forage on his own. They say he spends a lot of time riding on his mom’s back and playing with his mother and older sister.
The Tulsa Zoo is home to seven chimpanzees.
Native to west and central Africa, chimpanzees are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List because of habitat loss.
