A Tulsa man was convicted on Friday in the death of his girlfriend’s 18-month-old daughter.
Scott Bolden, 25, was tried on first-degree murder and child abuse by injury.
Doctors told police the girl had a significant brain injury and needed immediate surgery to reduce the swelling and pressure in her cranium.
A Tulsa County jury found him guilty on both counts and recommended a life sentence. Formal sentencing will be Dec. 14.
Bolden and the baby’s mother, Heidi Benjamin, were arrested after the toddler died from a severe brain injury. According to documents, Benjamin said she was in the shower and the toddler was in Bolden’s care when the fatal brain injury occurred. Police records show the couple called for help on Tuesday evening, when the girl lost consciousness and they couldn't wake her up.
The child's body also showed evidence of old bruising, doctors said.
Benjamin pleaded guilty last week to child neglect and permitting child abuse and was sentenced to 14 years. She won’t be eligible for parole until 2016.
At the time the baby received fatal injuries, there was an active protective order against Bolden's for his ex-girlfriend and his own 4-year-old daughter.
