A Jay man died after his motorcycle hit a deer on a Mayes County highway Tuesday afternoon, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened on Highway 20 east of Spavinaw at about 6 p.m.

The OHP says Loren Larkin, 31, was riding a 2003 Honda motorcycle westbound when a deer jumped out in front of it.

Troopers said the impact threw Larkin and his passenger over 220 feet. He was taken to a Tulsa hospital where he was pronounced dead.  The passenger - Catrina Gordon, 27, of Spavinaw - was taken to a Joplin hospital where she was listed in good condition.

The OHP says neither rider was wearing a helmet.
