All Clear After Potential Hazardous Substance Closes Tulsa Neighborhood

Neighbors are returning to their homes after a Tulsa neighborhood was given the all clean following a potential hazardous material situation.

Police had to block off and evacuate part of a neighborhood near 17 and Memorial Monday night after receiving a phone call of suspicious behavior.

They said when they arrived at the home, the door was open and when they went inside they found a white, powdery substance.

That’s when police said they call the Tulsa Fire Department Hazmat team.

“Well, it’s a white powder. You get a lot of white powder calls, you know, you got methamphetamine white powder, some homemade explosives are white, powdery in nature, so there’s a lot of things it could have been. Until we ruled all those out, we had to think of the worst,” said Paul Ator with TFD Hazmat.

Firefighters said the substance turned out to be a non-hazardous cleaning solution. They said they found a pound or more of the substance inside.

Investigators said the substance can also be used to help materials absorb into the skin.

Crews said once the situation was clear, neighbors were able to return home.
