Members of the Poteau High School Special Olympic football team will have their dreams come true Friday evening in Tulsa. The athletes will take the field during the halftime of the Oklahoma 6A championship game at the University of Tulsa's football stadium.
They will play eight minutes of flag football against Catoosa's Special Olympic football team.
Poteau coach Barbara Leonard told KFSM-TV, the CBS affiliate in Fort Smith, the students are excited about the game.
“Our kids feel like it's their Superbowl even though it's only an eight minute game. It's a big deal to them to get to play in front of thousands and thousands of people,” said Coach Barbara Leonard.
The Poteau High School football team donated ten of their own jerseys for the team to wear for the big day.
“It doesn't matter if we win or lose it's just about our kids having a great time and giving it the best that they can,” Leonard said. “They give it all heart when they`re out there on the field.”
The state championship game featuring Jenks and Union high schools kicks off at 7:05 p.m.
