TU Football Loses By 10 On The Road

The TU Golden Hurricane football team took on Houston in Texas Saturday morning. Tulsa fought hard, but fell 28-38 to the Cougars.

TU got down early in the game, allowing Houston to score in the first quarter with ten minutes on the clock. On second and six, Houston's Steven Dunbar completed a catch, advancing the Cougars up field. Junior defensive tackle Derrick Luetjen then made a stop for TU. One play later, Tulsa's Michael Mudoh made a major stop at the one yard line. TU proceeded to fight back on defense, holding the Cougars for the next two plays. After third and goal, Houston's running back Kenneth Farrow ran it in for the touchdown. The Cougars then took a 7-0 lead over Tulsa.

With less than 11 minutes on the clock, TU's Zack Langer ran for six yards and gained the first down. At the 8:07 mark, TU quarterback Dane Evans scrambled in the pocket before running the ball to the 49 yard line for a first down. Houston's defense then stepped up and stopped TU, regaining offensive possession.

Cougars' running back Ryan Jackson gained 56 yards on the first carry of the second drive. A few plays later, Houston scored their second touchdown. Houston was now 2-2 on drives, and Farrow was now leading his team scoring both touchdowns.

TU was trailing 14-0 by the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter got underway with Keevan Lucas breaking through multiple Houston defenders, gaining 21 yards for Tulsa. At the 13:14 mark, TU decided to punt on fourth down and missed the deep field goal. TU later came back, putting points on the board with 5:16 in the quarter. Evans climbed up the pocket and hit Keyarris Garrett, who carried it to the four yard line. Langer came back on the next play and carried it in, which made it a 7-14 ball game.

After the half, TU came out and tied the game up in the third. Houston would then score again taking a 21-14 lead. Tulsa then matched that by scoring a touchdown shortly after. Evans launched it to Garrett for the score. The game was now tied, 21-21, with 2:37 left of play in the third. At the 1:19 mark, Houston bounced back with another touchdown. The Cougars led the game 28-21 going into the fourth.

Opening the fourth quarter, Evans threw an interception into the hands of Cougars' defensive back Howard Wilson. Luetjen came back tough on defense, sacking the Cougars quarterback before he had a chance to look for a play. Mudoh then recovered the loose ball for TU on the next play.

With seven minutes left, Evans threw a touchdown pass to Zach Epps. The game was now tied 28-28.

With 3:31 in the final quarter, Houston's Dunbar set off on a 37 yard run on a third and fourth pass play. At the 3:07 mark, Farrow scored his fourth touchdown for the Cougars. They were now winning 35-28.

After the score, TU was under pressure to find a way to tie up the game again. With 1:51 left to play, Evans threw another pick, this time in the hands of Adrian McDonald.

With one minute, Houston went for three. The Cougars made the field goal, advancing their lead to ten. Houston would follow up with another pick at the end of the game.
