The winter system that produced the snow yesterday is now well east of the state, but more cold air will remain for the next 48 hours before the upper air pattern begins a transformation allowing for a different air mass to arrive across the region. This shallow arctic air will remain today, tomorrow, and into early Wednesday morning before sliding eastward. Another fast moving surface boundary will move into the area Wednesday, but this only brings a minor cool down compared to today's temps along with north winds. Most data support a short wave approaching the area Friday, with a stronger wave nearing this weekend. If the moisture can return ahead of this wave, showers and thunderstorms will be possible Saturday late into Sunday morning, but the higher chances may reside across extreme eastern sections of the state, or possibly across southeastern OK and northeast Texas. The extended data may support another quick shot of cold air about this time next week.
The headline of the day will remain the very cold air and gusty northwest winds. Temperatures this morning will drop into the mid and upper teens and only move to near freezing (or a few degrees off the mark) for the afternoon high. Roadways may be slick in some locations across northeastern and eastern OK due to yesterday's snow and caution will be advertised for the next 12 hours before most of the snow will sublimate.
Tuesday morning may see even colder conditions with clear sky and light winds allowing numbers dropping into the lower and mid-teens before highs Tuesday afternoon move into the lower 40s. Wednesday temps may approach the upper 40s or lower 50s after starting in the upper 20s.
Thursday into Friday the first short wave approaches with a very slight chance of a shower or two across extreme eastern OK. This would be represented by a low pop (10%) on our extended forecast, with higher chances with the second and stronger wave Saturday into Sunday. This chance is currently around 50%.
Temperatures Thursday through Saturday will migrate into the upper 40s and lower 50s for afternoon highs with morning lows in the mid to upper 30s.
Thanks for reading the Monday Morning weather discussion and blog.
Have a super great day.
