A McAlester elementary school principal along with five Oklahoma schools were honored by the U.S. Department of Education Tuesday afternoon.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan recognized 340 schools across the county as National Blue Ribbon Schools during a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Kathy Hunt, principal at McAlester's Edmond Doyle Elementary School was also recognized for her work. Hunt was one of eight principals nationwide to receive the Terrel H. Bell Award, which honors leaders for their work in guiding schools, often under challenging circumstances.

The Blue Ribbon Schools program honors schools for overall academic excellence or progress made in closing achievements gaps.
