Oklahoma Highway Officials Prepare For Cold Snap

Oklahoma highway officials say they're preparing for a series of weather systems that forecasters predict will bring sub-freezing temperatures and a chance of snow to the state later this week.

The National Weather Service says a cold front expected to move southeastward across Oklahoma Monday will be followed by much colder air, strong winds and plummeting wind chills.

Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing across northwestern Oklahoma with highs Tuesday reaching only the 30's and 40's. Forecasters say a second cold front will pass over the state later in the week with snow possible by the weekend.

State Department of Transportation officials say they're making sure all 122 salt sheds are fully stocked and that all 550 trucks and more than 1,000 maintenance employees are ready for the wintry weather.

ODOT says typically, bridges freeze first during winter storms. During winter storms, the agency works closely with local law enforcement to monitor road and traffic conditions.
