The Tulsa women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to UConn in the American Athletic Conference Championship quarterfinals on Sunday morning at the Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn. TU concluded the season with an 11-8-2 overall record, while the Huskies moved to 12-4-4 overall.
“It was tough conditions with 20-25 mile per hour winds that even took out the electricity to the stadium, but I think the girls handled themselves with class and composure, and fought hard through the adversity,” coach Kyle Cussen said. “We have known since the first day of practice that this was going to be a special group, the synergy they have as a team can't be manufactured. We knew with the new conference and a young team it was going to be a tough schedule ahead, but they handled it very, very well. This has been a fun team to coach and be around, and the toughest part about our loss today is knowing that on Monday we won't be together at practice. We were unfortunate to not score a goal on our chances today and it is disappointing that our season is over, but I am proud of the team for all they accomplished this season.”
Rachel Hill put UConn on the board at the 54:15 mark off an assist from Riley Houle. The goal was scored from inside the box into the top right corner.
The Huskies had a 23-4 lead in shots, including a 12-1 advantage in shots on goal, while both teams had two corner kicks.
Christina Holmes had three shots, one of which was on goal, and Rachel Thun added one attempt. Courtney McKeon logged all 90 minutes between the posts and picked up 11 saves.
“Courtney came up big today,” Cussen said. “She played well all year, but today was her finest moment and I am really proud of the effort she gave.”
