Broken Arrow's utility department has repainted 1,000 fire hydrants across their community this year. City officials said the initiative began in April and their goal was to paint 1,000 hydrants and continue to do so for the next nine years.
Officials said the city's water distribution system stretches about 650 miles and includes an estimated 10,000 fire hydrants. The city of Broken Arrow says while the fire department routinely tests the hydrants on an on-going basis, the repainting effort ensures each fire hydrant will receive a fresh coat of paint and nearby obstructions are removed.
“A fresh coat of paint sends a positive message to residents and creates a favorable impression of the City and the quality of utilities to the customers we serve,” said Utilities Director Anthony Daniel.
The city since they began in April, workers have tested and painted 1,000 hydrants, repaired 197 hydrants and replaced 16.
On Thursday, workers painted their 1,000th fire hydrant in the 500 block of West Oakland Place.
