Sometimes kids have the reputation of not caring about anyone but themselves, but some Skiatook students are debunking that reputation.
Some of the Skiatook fourth and fifth graders in declared this month Socktober in order to bring a little warmth to people who need it.
In teacher Danielle Dailey's classroom, kids were making posters for the last few days of their drive to collect 1,500 pairs of socks to be donated to Catholic Charities.
"The kids decided this was something they wanted to do," Dailey said.
Jax Ward was working on a poster that features a character named Sockaclaus.
Socktober started as a sock drive, but actually they've been taking anything – gloves, hats, toiletries, and of course, lots of socks. So far they've counted more than 600 pairs.
The Skiatook Fire Department dropped bags of socks off at the school, but they haven't been counted yet.
There's also a collection box in the cafeteria to make it easy for everyone, but they've got a ways to go.
Fifth grader, Jaxon Linton, and his classmates have latched onto the project with all the enthusiasm they can muster.
"It's been really neat to see them so excited about something that is not about themselves," said Dailey.
The students will go on a field trip to Catholic Charities next month to find out what happened to the socks they collected.
