Quinn Starker scored the game-winning goal to give Tulsa a 1-0 upset win over 24th-ranked SMU on Wednesday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 8-5-1 on the season and 4-2 in the American Athletic Conference, while SMU fell to 8-4-2 overall and 3-1-2 in the league.
TU handed the Mustangs their first loss in nine-straight games, including their first loss in the league.
“I thought the first half we were combining quite well off our strikers and getting the ball forward,” coach Tom McIntosh said. “I thought we did a good job in our combination play, got some good crosses in, which led to some good shots on goal. Obviously the delivery of our corner kicks was good tonight, which was a huge plus. We created good shots in a number of different ways. I thought the defense was good, we didn't give up too many good chances. Defensively the back four were tremendous and did what they were suppose to do.”
Starker punched in the goal off a rebound attempt taken by Austin Neil for his first goal of the season and second of his career.
Neil had a team-best five shots, three of which were on goal, while Aymar Sigue and Geoffrey Dee each had three attempts. Jake McGuire logged all 90 minutes between the posts, had four saves and earned his fourth shutout on the year.
Tulsa had a 16-10 lead in shots, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal, and an 11-5 lead in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday against Temple. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
