Four men's soccer players netted a goal to lead Tulsa to a 4-3 win over 16th-ranked USF on Wednesday night at Corbett Stadium in Tampa, Fla. TU moved to 6-4-1 on the season and 2-1 in the American Athletic Conference, while USF fell to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the league.
“We showed a lot of character tonight,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “We combined really well, and in the first half controlled much of the game. We made a couple of mistakes on the counter and they got behind us. We didn't stay connected enough in the back in the second half, but we got forward and scored four tremendous goals. Aymar wanted to take the PK, which shows a lot of character as he has had a lot of bad luck scoring so far this season. The guys supported him; he stepped up and hit a great penalty kick. Ray and Cameron also had good goals, and Byron came in off the bench and got us going. The bench made an impact and I am very pleased with how we are building our depth.”
Byron Knowles-Ramirez put the Golden Hurricane on the board first at the 31:15 mark and the Hurricane held onto the advantage for over 40 minutes.
Lindo Mfeka evened the score at the 73:26 mark, and just 23 seconds later Edwin Moalosi gave the Knights the go-ahead goal. Cameron Drackett found the back of the net with 79:06 ticked off the clock to tie the contest at 2-2.
Ray Saari netted a goal in the 82nd minute and Aymar Sigue scored on a penalty kick, his first goal of the season, at the 83:36 mark, to give the Hurricane a two-goal cushion.
Lucas Baldin got one back for USF at the 84:52 mark, but the Knights wouldn't score again as TU picked up the victory.
USF had an 18-16 lead in shots, both teams had eight shots on goal, and the Hurricane a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Sigue and Drackett both had three shots, while Tony Rocha, Rollie Rocha and Saari all had two attempts. Brandon Hanat logged all 90 minutes between the posts for five saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday against UConn. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
