Hundreds of students showed off their best shooting skills in Kellyville Tuesday. They were part of a big skeet shooting competition.
The best shooters in the state's five districts compete in Oklahoma City next month.
Brian Campbell is the agricultural teacher in Depew and he was helping run the scoring table for the shooting event.
There were about 400 kids there from 50 schools in Northeast Oklahoma. It was a district skeet shooting competition.
"Today only FFA kids are participating, but the Wildlife Department is putting it on for us," Campbell said.
Each shooter gets the opportunity to shoot 20 targets, sometimes they come one at a time, sometimes two. The teams and individuals were scored on the number of targets they hit.
When we were there, teams from Vian and Porum were leading the junior and the senior levels.
The Wildlife Department has a program called STEP, which is shotgun training and education program, supporting competitions like this is part of that.
"We wanna give kids the opportunity to get out and get into shotgun sports,” said Damon Spring. "Safety is the main concern no matter what, if it's not safe we don't do it."
The top shooting teams from Tuesday in the juniors were: Sand Springs, Owasso, Vian and Oologah. From the seniors it was: Bluejacket, Eufaula, Owasso and Warner.
Individual winners for the juniors were: T.J. Trotter, Vian; Tucker Frame, Checotah; Zachery Freeman, Sand Springs; Connor Cash, Webbers Falls.
For the seniors it was: Dax Pipins, Bluejacket; Mark Willimas, Oologah; Kyle Parks, Bristow; Gus Butter, Olive.
They'll all compete in Oklahoma City next month.
