Tulsa Soccer Draws No. 2 Creighton

Tulsa senior Akeil Barrett tied the game and forced two overtime periods, as the Golden Hurricane men's soccer team tied #2 Creighton, 1-1, on Saturday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 2-2-1 on the season, while the Bluejays moved to 4-0-1 overall.

“It was a real even game,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “Both teams just pressed each other pretty hard and made it difficult for guys to play. Both teams competed well and created enough chances to win the game. It was a tremendous run by Akeil up the middle as he split the defense. Obviously he's a good runner with the ball, he has great speed and it was a first-class goal.”

Timo Pitter put Creighton on the board first as he scored from five yards out off a pass from Fabian Herbers at the 39:18 mark. The Bluejays held onto the advantage until eight minutes into the second frame as Barrett took the ball 45 yards up the field, split the defense, went one-on-one with the keeper and scored from eight yards out. Barrett's goal was the first against Creighton this season.

“When Ray passed me the ball I just had two defenders to run past, so I just dribbled, cut to the opposite side and then cut across to play it to the far post,” Barrett said. “They are a very physical team so it is a big deal to get the first goal against them.”

Neither team found the back of the net in the last 37 minutes of regulation or the two 10-minute golden goal periods so the game ended in the 1-1 tie.

Creighton had a narrow 12-11 lead in shots, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal, but TU had an 8-5 lead in corner kicks.

Barrett had a team-best five shots, while Cameron Drackett added three attempts. Jake McGuire logged 110 minutes in goal for five saves.

Tulsa will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 16th against cross-town rival Oral Roberts. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
