A man fled the scene of an armed robbery after he took money from cash registered but failed at gaining entry into a store's safe, police said.

Just before 4 p.m., a man armed with a gun walked into the Family Dollar Store at 2215 N. Harvard Ave. and demanded money, according to investigators.

The handful of customers inside the store told police the man threatened all of them with a shotgun before taking the register's cash and trying to open the safe.

"He did point a weapon at a couple of the individuals in the store, although he didn't fire any rounds into the store, and he didn't assault any of the individuals physically," Officer Aaron Phillips said.

He ran off after he couldn't get inside the safe, shedding his clothing in a nearby neighborhood, police said.
