Animal rescue organizations say more pets get lost of July 4 than any other day of the year. Getting your dog microchipped and leaving it inside at home are two of the best ways to protect your furry family member.

Local groups remind owners to take the following steps to protect your pet:

  • Be sure your pet is wearing an up-to-date and visible ID on its collar.
  • Take a current photo of your dog, just in case.
  • Exercise your dog during the day before parties begin.
  • Keep charcoal, fireworks and any other fire source away from curious pups.
  • Leave your dog at home during fireworks.
  • Leave gentle music on in the background to help distract from the noise.

Here are some links to local "lost and found" groups on Facebook in case the worst happens.
