BNSF Train Collides With Truck Near Pawnee

Five people were injured after a train collided with a truck outside Pawnee Friday at 12:27 p.m.

It happened west of Pawnee, in Lela, north of U.S. Highway 64 at the crossing with NS 34300 Road. That railway line is operated by Burlington Northern Santa Fe.

A grandmother, 51-year-old Patricia Ringwald, of Pawnee, and four minors from Duncan were in the vehicle, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The train, which was going from Enid to Tulsa, was doing 48 mph at the time of the wreck, according to BNSF. The track speed has a 55 mph regulation. There were 55 cars being hauled.

The head locomotive was equipped with a camera so there will be video of the wreck, BNSF says.

All five people in the truck were injured but are expected to survive. Ringwald and two minors were taken by medical helicopter. Ringwald was transported in critical condition and the children were in serious condition. Two other minors were treated and released after being transported by ground ambulance.

The train's engineer and a passenger were not injured, OHP said.

The Pawnee County Sheriff's Office also responded to the collision.
