The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a five-month infant this week.

According to a news release, Sheriff Robert Dierks said the child identified as Michael Jones, Jr. died as a result of injuries suffered in his home.

He says that emergency services were contacted in the early morning hours of May 26, 2014 in reference to an infant having difficulty breathing. The boy was taken to the Independence, Kansas hospital and then transferred a children's hospital in Kansas City where he died on May 29, 2014.

Sheriff Robert Dierks say medical personnel advised authorities the infant had suffered trauma to the head. He said his office and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are treating the death as an accident unless their investigation turns up evidence to indicate otherwise.

"This will be a long term investigation and we have a great team of people working on this case. We want to be thorough in uncovering the facts surrounding these injuries. Obviously this is a tragic event and on behalf of the Sheriff's Office, we wish to extend our thoughts and prayers to this family," said Sheriff Robert Dierks.

He said anyone with information pertinent to the case is asked call the sheriff's office at 1-800-498-1019.
