A woman was fortunate to escape injury after hitting a horse in the road early Saturday morning. It happened in the 800 block of South 161st East Avenue.

The horse did not survive.

The woman was northbound on 161st at about 5:15 a.m. and was unable to miss a horse that had gotten out of its enclosure and was on the road, according to Sergeant Chris Moudy with the Tulsa Police Department.

"She's upset, but she is uninjured; she'll be fine," Moudy said.

The horse suffered a broken leg and internal injuries and was put down at the scene.

Moudy said they have had a few similar incidents over the last year.

"Horses and cows, they're heavy animals," Moudy said. "They will cause massive damage to a vehicle and potential injury, and of course, the animals themselves usually don't survive being struck by a car."
