Late-game heroics by Matt Brandy were spoiled by Dallas Baptist as the Patriots took the second game of a three-game series from the Oral Roberts University baseball team on Friday in Dallas, 5-4.
ORU fell to 6-7 on the season while DBU avoided its first three-game losing streak of the season and moved to 10-4.
Brandy has hit safely in all 13 ORU contests this season. He had two hits on Friday, including a home run in the seventh inning. The hitting streak is currently the longest in the Southland Conference.
Brandy has hit both home runs for the Golden Eagles this season.
Jose Trevino continues to heat up, as he recorded two hits and a run batted in on Friday, while Logan Domenico, Tyler Boss and Audie Afenir each singled. Emmanuel Forcier reached with a pair of walks, extending his on base streak to 13 games.
Guillermo Trujillo started the game on the mound for the Golden Eagles and allowed four runs on six hits in seven innings. Hayden Holley (0-1) took the loss after allowing the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Justin Wall led the offensive output for Dallas Baptist with three hits, two RBI's and scored twice, while David Martinelli recorded a pair of hits and scored a run. Brandon Koch (3-0) earned the victory in two-innings pitched in relief.
ORU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on heads up base running by Forcier. Trevino hit a slow grounder to short and beat out the throw at first. Forcier scored from second on Trevino's hit when the DBU first baseman was slow to react.
The Patriots answered in the bottom of the inning with a Salters RBI double over Boss' head in right field, followed by an RBI single to right off the bat of Justin Wall, to giving DBU a 2-1 lead after an inning.
In the bottom of the third, Martinelli went opposite field, doubling over Domenico's head in left to plate Salters and Wall and exted the Patriots' lead to 4-1. After the third inning, Trujillo settled down and didn't allow another runner in the next four innings.
Brandy tied the game in the seventh inning with a two-run homer over the left field wall. Unfortunately, DBU retook the lead with one out in the bottom of the eighth as Wall struck again, this time with a home run to left to make the score 5-4.
ORU was unable to answer in the ninth inning, ending their five-game winning streak.
The Golden Eagles and Patriots will face off in the rubber match on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
