Red Cross Honors Tulsa Mayor, Restaurant Employees For Performing CPR

The American Red Cross has honored Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett and local two restaurant employees who jumped into action when a man began having an apparent seizure last month.

Bartlett began to administer CPR to the man and Marty Solis and Michael Chiado assisted him.

At the City of Tulsa Red Cross blood drive on Friday, Bartlett was awarded the American Red Cross Certificate of Merit and Solis and Chiado were awarded Certificates of Extraordinary Personal Action.

Bartlett said he first learned CPR while in the Air National Guard in the 1970s, but took another CPR class at the Tulsa chapter of the American Red Cross while he was a board member.

He "helped to sustain the life of (the man) until emergency personnel could transport him to a local hospital," a Red Cross spokesperson said.

The Certificate of Merit is the highest award given by the Red Cross to an individual or team of individuals who saves or sustains a life using skills and knowledge learned in an agency course. The certificate bears the signature of the President of the United States, honorary chairman of the American Red Cross and the signature of the chairman of the American Red Cross.
