Southeast Kansas Mother, Sons Serve Together In Afghanistan

It's often heard in the military that soldiers are like a family, but four US Army Reserve soldiers from the 1011th Quartermaster Company based out of Independence, Kansas deployed to Afghanistan actually do serve together.

Specialist Lisa Sulenes, her two sons, Private Second Class Joe Sulenes, Specialist Frank Sulenes and nephew Specialist Keith Yarnell were deployed in September 2013 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Erie, Kansas residents work at a sorting facility in Afghanistan, processing 8,000 shipping containers of equipment a month as the military gets ready to leave the country.

"It's great to know that we are saving taxpayers money every day by ensuring useable equipment does make it back home or wherever it's needed," Lisa Sulenes said.

"Unlike other soldiers, I also have the added bonus of having my family here with me."

Specialist Lisa Sulenes teaches sixth grade in St Paul, Kansas.

The Quartermaster Company is attached to the 1103rd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion stationed at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan.
