Friday Morning Update

Howdy friends.  Good morning! 

Thanks for reading the Friday morning weather blog and discussion.  We're looking at nice but windy conditions this afternoon with highs upper 60s.  The weekend looks good with mostly sunny and mild conditions despite a weak boundary back-dooring through part of NE OK late Saturday night.  Rain is not expected this weekend, but a major storm system is expected to roll across the state by early next week bringing some of the coldest air of the fall season.  

Yesterday was gorgeous.  After morning lows near or slightly below freezing, temperatures moved into the lower and mid-60s with sunshine and light winds.  Yesterday proved to be the best weather day of the week. 

The air mass will remain dry across the state during the short term.  We'll anticipate sunshine today with morning lows in the upper 30s and highs in the upper 60s.  A strong area of low pressure will form out of the Rockies today and slide across the central to northern plains states.  A surface ridge of high pressure is located to our east.  We'll be stuck in the middle with increasing south winds at 15 to 25 mph across eastern OK and winds nearing 35 mph across the western half of the state.  A wind advisory may be required for our neighbors in the western third of the state but wind speeds will remain below advisory levels in northeastern OK.  

A stout upper level system will dive across the state of Nebraska tonight and help shove a surface boundary southward.  This boundary will stay north of the Oklahoma Saturday, but a weak boundary may backdoor across the Missouri Valley making a brief appearance Sunday morning for a few hours.  This would only result in a minor wind shift early Sunday morning.   

The south winds will return Monday with highs approaching 70 but much colder air will spread southward late Monday evening into Tuesday and Wednesday bringing temperatures down into the 40s for afternoon highs Tuesday and Wednesday.  Morning lows could be in the upper 20s.  

A powerful system located across Hudson Bay will be moving across the NE portion of the country early next week.  Cold air will follow behind this system and will move southeast across a large chunk of the nation.  A surface ridge of high pressure will build down through the central US helping to keep the cold air in place for the middle of the week.  Some light precipitation in the form of showers or drizzle may be possible Tuesday into Wednesday, but this will be light with no major impacts.  This cold air appears to be a glancing blow and will most eastward while modifying Thursday and Friday.

Friday Night Football:

Games will start with temps around 57 and finish around 50 with south breezes at 10 to 15 mph and mostly clear sky.

Super Typhoon Haiyan. 

This monster storm slammed into the Philippines yesterday with 196 mph sustained winds gusting over 230 mph.  Unreal.  Massive devastation and some loss of life will be expected.  You may also see or hear this storm now referenced as " Yolanda" but it's the same storm.
