There's a new face in the race for state schools superintendent. Freda Deskin formally launched her campaign Monday, as a Democrat, at the Greenwood Cultural Center.
Deskin said she sees education somewhat like the Greenwood neighborhood, which went through tough times, but was rebuilt through cooperation and hard work.
Deskin said that's her mission for the education system in Oklahoma.
She points to her 40-plus years in Oklahoma schools - as a teacher, principal, superintendent and dean - and says, unlike other candidates, she's in a school every day.
"I see and hear the discouraged teachers and the discouraged students, where the love of learning has been replaced with excessive testing," Deskin said.
Former Oklahoma First Lady Kim Henry is serving as Deskin's campaign chairwoman.
The primary is next June.
