Independence Police Chief Harry Smith says the monkey was one of two that broke free July 10 at the Ralph Mitchell Zoo.

He says the escaped monkey was found dead on zoo property.
The other monkey was recaptured shortly after escaping.
Smith believes the monkey's death was due to last week's high temperatures and because of recent injuries it had suffered.
