Tahlequah Police have a man in custody after an overnight shooting death. Chief Nate King said Juan Carlos Caballero is in the Cherokee County Jail for first degree murder and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

Authorities responded to the shooting in the 200 block of Basin Street at 12:30 a.m., the chief said in a news release. They took Caballero into custody after finding the body of an unknown man at the residence.

Cause of death appears to be a gunshot wound, King said.

Caballero's girlfriend, Liliana Landaverde, is being held for possession of a controlled substance and failure to protect a minor child, according to the release.

"The investigation into the homicide is ongoing," King said.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is assisting Tahlequah Police in processing the crime scene. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Cherokee Nation Marshals, and the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department also responded to the shooting scene.
