A lightning strike was blamed for a starting a fire at a north Claremore home fire early Wednesday, according to fire officials.

Claremore firefighters were called to the home on Highway 88 across from Northeast Technology Center in Claremore just after 7 a.m.

Claremore Fire Marshal Jason Crandall said two people were awakened by a loud boom. They checked around the house and didn't see anything, so they went back to bed. A short time later, Crandall said a passerby noticed fire coming from the roof and called the fire department.

Firefighters arrived, woke up the residents, and got them out of the house, unharmed.

Crandall said they found the fire coming out of the roof near the top of the house.

Northwest Rogers County and Verdigris Fire provided water tanker support to the Claremore Fire Department, as they worked to extinguish it.

Officials believe lightning struck the home as storms moved through the community.

Crandall said he didn't yet have an estimate of the damage done to the house.
