Tulsa police arrested Oral Roberts basketball player Steven Roundtree on domestic violence complaints Sunday morning after he reportedly tried to strangle his girlfriend.
According to an arrest report, Roundtree assaulted a woman who is 23 weeks pregnant with his child.
Roundtree, 22, took the woman's phone and destroyed it while she tried to call 911, the arrest report says. He ran away when officers arrived at the home, but came back and took his girlfriend's car without permission after the officers left, the report says.
"The victim's injuries were a direct result of the suspect striking her in the mouth with his hands/fist, grabbing her by the face and pushing/pulling her throughout the apartment. Suspect also held the victim down while covering her face with a pillow in an attempt to suffocate her," the report says.
While the woman was attempting to call 911, Roundtree allegedly put his arm around her neck and choked her.
Roundtree faces complaints of domestic strangulation, domestic violence, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, interrupting a 911 call and obstructing a police officer.
An ORU spokesman told News On 6 Roundtree had been suspended from the basketball team shortly after the end of the 2012-13 season for an unrelated violation of team rules. He started 17 games last season and averaged nearly 10 points per game.
According to the woman's father, she and the baby are both OK, and she is staying with family.
Roundtree is expected in court on May 13.
