A Poteau man has been arrested on a complaint of stealing four cows from his neighbor. Kevin Lyle Hanna, 50, was arrested Thursday by the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.
Special Ranger Bart Perrier said Hanna sold the four cows at the Fort Smith Stockyards. The branded and ear-notched commercial cows were stolen from a neighboring ranch in February of this year.
“We would have never been able to positively identify these cows and charge the suspect if the owner hadn’t branded them,” Perrier said. “This is a prime example of why it is so important to brand your cattle.”
Hanna is being held at the LeFlore County jail on a $12,000 bond. If convicted of larceny of livestock, he could face up to 10 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines.
LeFlore County Deputy Sheriff Paul Cole also investigated the cattle theft.
