University of Tulsa football seniors Derrick Jackson and Dexter McCoil will play in this Friday's (Jan. 11) Casino Del Sol College All-Star Game. The game kicks off at 8 p.m. (Central Standard Time) from Kino Stadium in Tucson, Arizona.
Jackson and McCoil helped lead the Golden Hurricane to an 11-3 record, a Conference USA Championship, and a 31-17 victory over Iowa State in the 54th Annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl. Jackson and McCoil will play on the East Team.
Jackson, a 6-2, 294-pound defensive tackle, played in 47 games and had 29 starts in his career. He earned honorable mention all-Conference USA honors this past season after season totaling 41 tackles, including 23 solos and eight sacks for -41 yards. Jackson had a season-best four stops in four games. At the Liberty Bowl, he was credited with four tackles, two of them were solos and one sack for -5 yards. Jackson finished his career with 90 tackles and 15.5 TFLs for -57 yards.
McCoil, a 6-4, 222-pound safety, played in 51 career games and had 44 career starts. He was named a 2012 Conference USA first team selection and was one of the 15 finalists for the Jim Thorpe award, going to the nation's top defensive back. This season, he had a total of 91 tackles, including 59 solos and added five interceptions. McCoil completed his career with a school record 18 interceptions, also tying the Conference USA all-time record. He also finished with 316 career tackles and 25 pass break-ups.
The second annual Casino Del Sol All-Star Game is a post-season football exhibition game for seniors who are eligible of the draft. The game allows the athletes to showcase their talents to the scouts of the NFL, CFL, and Arena teams. Last year's roster had six players that were NFL draft picks and 61 players were invited to NFL training camps.
The coaches for the Casino Del Sol All-Star Game are Dick Tomey former head football coach of Arizona and Houston Nutt former head football coach at Arkansas and Ole Miss.
Last year, Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne and offensive tackle Tyler Holmes were participants in the Casino Del Sol College All-Star Game.
