Well, I've finally been able to catch my breath and reflect on this year's Komen Race for the Cure. I must say, for me, it was the best yet! The new location, the mild temperatures, and the perfect song during the Survivor Ceremony… it all was great! But there's another reason this year's race was so important.
During my annual check-up this past July, I got a call back from my doctor's office, saying they'd found something on the MRI. There was a spot about 5 millimeters on my left breast and they wanted to biopsy it. Now let me tell you, 5 millimeters is tiny! I was told about the size of 5 grains of sugar! But that teeny, tiny spot caused my heart to stop… again. It took me back 9 years to that first call from my doctor… the call when I was told I had breast cancer.
The biopsy was on a Friday and I wouldn't get the results until Monday. It was a very long weekend. I spent a lot of time praying and then I just told God that whatever he needed me to do, I was his. At that point, I really had a peace about everything. I had beaten cancer once and I could do it again. If I had a choice, I really didn't want this diagnosis again but I was putting it in God's hands. Monday morning, the call came. I heard the three most glorious words: NORMAL BREAST TISSUE! I am grateful for doctors that are persistent and for tests that are super sensitive. But I will always place my trust in a higher power!
So as you can imagine, I am more passionate, more committed and more determined than ever before to push for a cure; to help patients every day on their journey and to believe that one day, we will live in a world without breast cancer. For me, this year's Komen Race for the Cure was a celebration of my life and my hope for the future!
Blessings,
LeAnne Taylor
