Brisk southerly winds return to bring us back to reality with warmer nights and hot days.

Temperatures the last few days have been on quite a roller coaster ride with the much below normal values of Thursday and Friday and back to above normal values again this afternoon. We will be much above normal for the next several days due to a return to brisk southerly winds Sunday and a SW wind on Monday. That means cloud cover will be the only limitation on our daytime high temperatures and right now it appears we should have mostly cloudy morning skies and partly cloudy afternoon skies. As a result, we are looking at temperatures back at or above the 90 degree mark for Sunday and Monday. In fact, some of the numerical guidance even suggests we may make it into the upper 90s both days. It may be wishful thinking, but not buying into that possibility just yet.

Another factor is a weak, but nonetheless active NW flow pattern aloft. That typically produces some showers/storms along the High Plains well west of us and the ultimate track and strength of those systems is always a difficult forecast issue. Right now, it appears that a complex of storms coming off the High Plains will weaken as they work their way eastward during the overnight and early morning hours and will primarily affect the more northern counties.

Also, a warm front will move back northward and should be located along the OK/KS state line by early Sunday morning. That may provide a focus for additional shower/storm development later in the day Sunday into Sunday night. The return to southerly winds as the front moves north of us also means a return to above normal temperatures. As mentioned above, there are even some indications of upper 90s before a weak cool front arrives by early Tuesday.

That boundary will stall out in the general area or just south of us with a more E to NE wind for Tuesday and a more E to SE wind for the rest of the week. That will keep temperatures in check with lows back into the 60s and highs in the 80s which is at or a bit above normal. However, this pattern will also have at least a slight chance of showers/storms on just about any given day.

So, stay tuned and check back for updates.
