FORT WAYNE, Indiana – Saturday's doubleheader against IPFW showcased two extremes for the Golden Eagles.
ORU started the day with a 15-3 run rule over the Mastodons but followed it up right afterward with a disappointing 6-5 loss.
Jared Schlehuber had a big game in the first contest, racking up four RBIs. Bennett Pickar was right up there on the stat sheet as well with three runs scored and three RBIs of his own.
It didn't take ORU long to start the blowout, registering six runs in the first inning. They added three in the third inning, one in the fourth, and then five in the seventh inning to trigger the run rule.
Five ORU players had multiple hits in the game.
Mike Torrence picked up the win on the mound for ORU, throwing 5.1 inning and giving up four hits and three runs. Jason Kalber gave up 11 of his team's 15 allowed runs in the loss.
The second game of the day didn't go quite as smoothly for Oral Roberts.
The Golden Eagles had plenty of chances, racking up a massive 13 hits in the game and also seeing three errors from the Mastodons.
But ORU quite simply couldn't convert on those opportunities, leaving nine runners stranded in the loss.
ORU actually got up 5-2 in the fifth inning thanks to an IPFW error and some solid hitting. But that would be the last run of the day for the Golden Eagles.
The Mastodons scored two runs on doubles in the sixth inning, then converted in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game up and send it into extras as the game was slated for seven innings.
Down to its final out in the bottom of the ninth, IPFW managed a grounder from Steve Danielak to bring home the winning run.
With the split, ORU moved to 29-21 overall and 13-5 in Summit League play. IPFW finished the day at 16-36 (8-15).
Danielak picked up the win on the mound for IPFW while Lars Liguori got the loss.
The series finale is set for 10 a.m. on Sunday morning in Fort Wayne.
