I knew what I wanted WAAAAAY back in December. I'd seen enough. Christmas Day was the day. Kevin Durant, James Harden and Russell Westbrook combined for 63 points in a debut win over the Magic, while Miami's Big 3 exploded for 67 points against the defending champion Mavs.
On that day, I knew.
I knew I wanted to see OKC and Miami in the NBA Finals. As the season unfolded, their play on the floor reassured me that my dream matchup was worth hoping for. Durant went on to win the scoring title. LeBron will probably be league MVP. Both teams earned the No. 2 seeds in their conferences and both teams play a VERY exciting brand of hoops.
They like to run, they get out on fastbreaks, they dunk, they score, score, SCORE… It's the PERFECT NBA FINALS matchup. I WANT TO SEE IT.
There are some hoops fans out there that want to see Kobe face LeBron in the finals. I'll give it to you. That'd be a compelling series as well. But, OKC and Miami would be MORE compelling, to me.
It's "their" Big 3 against "our" Big 3. Bosh, Wade and James against Durant, Westbrook and Harden. The vets who, aside from Wade, are still looking for a championship ring against the up-and-coming young stars that could win multiple rings in the next few years if it all settles in according to plan.
I'd love to see these two teams go at it in the finals for years to come. It could happen, too. The Lakers and Spurs are getting older in the West. The Celtics are REALLY old in the East. There will be challengers, like the Clippers and Bulls and Grizzlies and MAYBE the Knicks.
But, my dream could be coming true for YEARS. I hope it happens this year. To me, they're clearly the two most exciting teams to watch.
Please, oh please, let it be Thunder vs. Heat for the right to wear the crown!
