The Oklahoma State Penitentiary says it appears an inmate found dead in his cell Monday morning was the result of a suicide.

Steve Wainscott, 53, was found hanging in his cell during the 9 a.m. count at the prison in McAlester.

Wainscott was pronounced dead by state medical personnel.

Wainscott was serving a 45-year prison sentence on a 2003 2nd degree murder conviction out of Carter County.

OSP Warden's Assistant Terry Crenshaw says Wainscott had a cellmate, but preliminary findings indicate it was suicide.
