In light of the recent assaults and near abductions, crime reporter Lori Fullbright teamed up with Lieutenant George Brown of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol to show people the best way to fight off an attacker.
If someone is trying to kidnap you or assault you, three things usually happen: fight, flight or freeze up. The first two are fine, but to avoid freezing up, prepare for an assault before it ever happens so you'll be ready to act.
Lieutenant Brown says, make your fists as tight as you can and lead with your strong hand.
"Remember to breathe," he said
He says people, especially women and children, can hit harder than you think. After punches, think knee strikes to the groin and gut - and make them count.
Lieutenant Brown says time plus distance equals safety. Inflict enough pain to give you enough time to escape, plus yell for help.
If they're coming at you from the front, they'll likely go for your throat so knock their arms away with force. If they get you on the ground, you can still punch from this position.
Look for anything nearby you can grab to hit your attacker, especially if they have a knife. If you carry a gun, be well trained and be prepared to kill.
He also recommends you use the buddy system whenever you can and never be put into a vehicle, but fight for all you're worth and then some.
