A rally in memory of a Florida teen killed earlier this month was held Thursday morning outside Tulsa's Central High School at 3101 West Edison.

Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by a neighborhood watch captain in Florida a month ago.

The Central High School rally was called "Hope in Hoodies" and started at 8 a.m.  School officials say Central's student council convinced school administrators to let it hold the rally before class.

Students tell News On 6 they want to send the message that "hoodies do not define students' value or determine their future."

The student council wrote a letter to the school's administration saying "Central has defied stereotypes by excelling academically, artistically and athletically." And they hope to continue to defy the odds with or without hoodies.

Read the letter.

Dozens of students who participated in Thursday's rally say they are the same age as Trayvon Martin and can identify with his hoodie.

In the letter they said "We are Trayvons and we are somebody."
