Spring break is here and with the rain hopefully winding down, you may be looking to get the kids out of the house.
With gas prices so high, many parents and grandparents want to do something fun with the kids without busting the budget.
At Sequoyah State Park on Ft. Gibson Lake, there's a lot to keep you busy: Golf, the state lodge, horseback riding.
But if you visit, make sure you take time to stop at the Three Forks Nature Center.
"It will help kids to learn that our environment is very important," said Lorie Kerr.
Park Naturalist Lorie Kerr has always loved animals and has always wanted to share that love with others, especially children.
"Kids nowadays, just don't get outside, so we're trying to bring the kids back to nature," Kerr said.
That's what Three Forks Nature Center is all about.
"It's amazing. Their face just lights up. They get so excited," Kerr said.
Inside there are exhibits where visitors can learn all about animals, even a hands-on skins and skulls section.
"Kids don't normally get to touch and feel and see what it feels like," she said.
Outside you'll find animals like Ike and Mike, red foxes rescued from a wildfire.
"Everybody loves the animals," she said.
A coyote named Wiley of course. And Taurus, a one winged bald eagle.
"He got caught in a power line when he was young," she said.
There's an owl named pretty girl, who fell out of a tree when she was young. Little Foot the beaver, fish and snakes. Everything to make a memorable visit.
"All of our animals here are native to Oklahoma," Kerr said.
In an age of video games and couch potatoes, the goal is to get kids active and learning while they have fun, and to experience what Oklahoma's outdoors have to offer.
"Not be cooped up in the house anymore, get back out to nature," Kerr said.
Sequoyah State Park is located just off highway 51 between Wagoner and Hulbert. It doesn't cost anything to get in.
Activities are scheduled this week for Spring Break. Some of those will cost a dollar or two.
